Luke 10:1-24.
Review Luke 10:1-24. Based on these verses, write a summary of the Lord’s counsel and instruction He gave the seventy.
The Lord told the seventy to travel the world in teams of two and to preach of Him and His gospel. He told them not to worry about food or clothes or money, only to go forth and all would be taken care of for them. The Lord also instructed them, in their preaching, that if people refused their word and did not want to hear, to “clean their hands” of their evil, so they would receive blessings only. Christ gave them power to act in His name, so they did all sorts or work and miracles in His name along with preaching to all those whom they came across.
Articles of Faith 1:6 states, “We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church.” Using the principles taught from Luke 10:1-2, 8-9, 17-20, write a paragraph that supports this Article of Faith.
These verses talk of the Quorum of the Seventy, missionaries and missionary work, priesthood blessings, and priesthood power; all of which we have and actively use in the church today. The Article of Faith also says, “Namely apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists and so forth.” In a roundabout way, the verses talk about these too. Jesus Christ was a prophet, and the twelve men who followed him were the apostles. Everyone knows that in their time they acted as pastors, teachers, and evangelists – which, as members of the church, we all participate in today. The Church has grown significantly since Christ’s time, but the Church is the same.
Go to the Church’s scripture website and read the topic of “Seventy” in the Guide to the Scriptures. Describe in one or two sentences how the scriptures show the existence of this office in the priesthood.
Luke 10 is the only Bible scripture that mentions the Seventy and therefore speaks of its existence, but their duties and roles are listed and mentioned several times in the Doctrine and Covenants, showing that the Quorum of the Seventy is a part of the functioning of this Church, and is needed.
