Even without stating it, everyone seems to understand quite clearly on their own that once you reach adulthood, married or not, money can be difficult to manage if you are not prepared for the responsibility. Whether trying to get your feet on the ground, starting college, or being married for the first time, the way that finances should work change constantly and it can be a hard adjustment. Even in marriage, money is in the top three reasons why couples typically get divorced - it is a big deal, so it is something that should be taken seriously and considered well. Because of this, it is why it is important to set a budget and to go over that budget constantly as various life events happen. Such as this: the way you budget your money when you are newly-weds will be different than how you spend your money after you have your first child and different still once you have a teenager in the home. Things change, and so should the budget.
Lucky for us when we got married, the only debt that we had between the two of us was paying off our cars and my wedding ring - typical debts, nothing huge. Even though he is more of a spender and I am more of a saver, we both do really well with living within our means and considering future needs and save. Especially with a move across the country coming up for us in a few weeks we have planned for a long time how much money we will need to have saved in order to pay for all of the expenses of moving, and we have done well with reaching that goal.
I think that the best thing that any couple can do is to communicate often about finances and figure out how to balance and manage them, in a way that both people agree on. It may not be easy, but it will definitely be worth it.
